Is There Life Without Music?
I just so happened to have married a man who also loves music. Love is not the right word. He lives and breathes music. If it was taken from him I think he would quite literally shrivel up and die. He writes, sings, and plays a multitude of instruments. I have posted about Tom's music before, but since then have added over 100 new followers! If you haven't checked out Tom's music , you should (You can find him on itunes as well). He is an amazing songwriter and has a lovely voice. As a result of his love of music, we have many instruments in our home and the kids love to listen and play as well. Another result is that I have greatly broadened my listening horizons at Tom's urging. No more Top 40 for me, thank goodness! I have been known to crank up the 80's music and occasionally early 90's R&B in the minivan however (can you say loser?). A few of my favorite artists (besides Tom) are:
David Mead
Andrew Bird
Calexico
The Jayhawks
Madeleine Peyroux
Mindi Smith
Wilco
and our favorite family artist, Dan Zanes.
We attend as many live shows as we can, which is not hard here in Music City, USA.
Big sister takes violin lessons and is a very quick study! She has a great ear for music. When we signed her up I had visions of Tom and myself with earplugs at the ready, her screeching away on her instrument, but I have to say that it is a joy to listen to her play. She sings with the voice of angel, with a natural vibrato that makes us laugh. It's funny to hear it coming from a 6 year old. She also plays a mean harmonica.
Big brother sings all day long. At this very moment he is "playing" one of his favorite songs, Rock Island Line, on a guitar. Little Brother can hang with the older siblings too... he just hums along. It brings joy to my heart to hear them.
Music is such a big part of our lives. I agree with the experts who say that it makes for smarter happier children. My children are happiest when we are having a dance party in our living room.
What does music do for you?
Oh, and if you haven't commented on my previous post, Words, take a moment to do so. I am really enjoying reading about the words that you pick.

We love music at our house too. We dance, sing, and do hand movements to music.
I love Dan Zanes :D
Music does emotions for me. It can change my mood from sad to happy in an instant. It also provides the understanding and acknowledgment of my feelings that sometimes the people in my life can't. For example I might be very stressed and depressed about something, something that I don't want to talk about, something that I don't want to share with anyone. I just want to feel it out and then get over it. That is when the "sad" songs come in handy. Its not like I want to feel all depressed or anything I just need to feel like its okay to feel bad sometimes and then its okay to get over it. The same thing goes for when I am super happy and excited about something and can't share it with anyone. I can put on an awesome jumpy happy song and no one wonders why I am jumping around singing at the top of my lungs because that is just what people do when they hear those kinds of songs :D
Oh I love music! I have a hard time cleaning without it. And your hubby is amazing!
My husband is a musician (as well as a chef) and plays the guitar. He has been in numerous bands over the years and is on a dry streak right now. His bass player moved to FL and his drummer to TN! Yuck. He plays progressive death metal (heavy metal) but loves all music.
My daughter is learning to play guitar and the boys are into music to such an extent that I am amazed. AT 2 1/2 and 4 BOTH of them try to play guitar and piano. The youngest loves to sing.
You will rarely find my house without some type of music playing in one room or another!
I'm visiting you from SITS and I'm glad I did. I am your newest follower. Your post was especially poignant to me and I actually went back and re-read something I wrote almost a year ago about music. If you have a moment you might enjoy it: http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2009/01/day-music-died.html
Thanks for a great post.
WOW! We love music in our home too! Though I've never heard of those groups you mentioned. Music is wonderful! It can relax you, make you think of long ago days, make you happy.. I could go on! I think it's wonderful God has blessed your family musically!
Music, it can transform a bad mood into a good one, we do not listen to it as often as your sweet family, but we do listen often. My little Jada has moved ever since she was a baby, she hears a tune and its instant movement, its like it was preprogrammed into her.We love to watch her dance, she's in baton's now at the age of two, people can't believe that a two year old will stand and take lessons like she does, her sister Raina Gail never would have done that, she would have wondered off, or been too embarrassed to do it, she's my little me, I was as backwards as she can be, we do try to work on it, it hurts to be painfully shy, and leads to bad behavior if one feels unaccepted, I know all about that 1st hand!!!
Love your posts!!! keep the music playing!!
I LOVE music and don't take enough time to stop, listen and let loose. Yesterday though, I "unplugged" from the computer, put on a playlist and danced around a bit with my almost 3 year old! She loved it and we giggled and laughed and danced and giggled some more! It made my day!
BTW, thanks! You've inspired me to write about it/music! ;-)
Who doesn't love music? Music has so much power! It has the power to change moods and brighten days...
I can't get enough of music. I have this amazing library in my brain all about music and musician. And I never turn down new tunes...checkin out Tom's music now!
ooh, that's a lifelong goal for me - to play the violin! i've always wanted to, for some reason. kudos to your daughter for being a natural!
I play the flute in a local symphony here and love it! I've played the flute since I was 9 and all through high school. I really missed it in college, so was very excited to be part of this symphony here. my kids love coming to my rehearsals and concerts with me and pointing out every instrument they see. my husband and i also play the piano (he more so than i, actually, plus the guitar), so music is a big part of our lives. there is such a large range of music, something to express every emotion and at times, it brings a very peaceful (or rambunctious) :) tone to our home.
WOW! I'm totally inspired by this! I've only just cleared my piano down and allow my children to have free reign on it (it's old and suitable for this!).... I would love one day to have a music room. Where do I start with music?? Without it I am incomplete. Cheesy, but true. Actually... I have a Music Education Degree. My teaching career focused on being a music specialist.... but I fell in love with day-to-day classroom teaching!!
Music is often helps me connect with God. When my spirit is not in it.... it only takes a few moments of a song to bring me into a place where I can lay it all down.
I listened to one of your hubby's tunes. He is a gifted man alright.
Great post Jenny!
your kids are seriously so cute.
So, did you say your dad was in the Faded Blue? Which one was he? "Blast-Off Girls" is one of my top 3 all time favorite movies! An info on this band would be highly appreciated!
